Resource for psychiatry in South Africa

About us

The South African Society of Psychiatrists (SASOP) promotes, maintains and honours the discipline of psychiatry. Established in 1952, we are the only professional body in South Africa that protects the rights of and acts in the best interest of our members. We serve our community by providing information and guidance on mental health, campaign to break the stigma and build on ensuring access to care for all.

"We would never tell someone with a broken leg that they should stop wallowing and get it together. We don’t consider taking medication for an ear infection something to be ashamed of. We shouldn’t treat mental health conditions any differently.”

- Michelle Obama
